Governor Snyder says marriages are legal, but rights associated with those same sex marriages are on hold

Many legal experts have predicted that the matter of same sex marriage will have to be settled by the U.S. Supreme Court.
Many legal experts have predicted that the matter of same sex marriage will have to be settled by the U.S. Supreme Court.

LANSING, MI (WTVB) - The marriages of more than 300 same-sex couples who wed in Michigan on Saturday were legal, but the rights associated with marriage are on hold.  That’s according to Governor Rick Snyder, who says the stay issued by a federal appeals court means the state’s ban on same-sex marriages is back in place after being briefly overturned on Friday.

The appeals court plans to hear formal arguments in the lawsuit challenging the ban, but no date has been set.
