Unemployment rate back up to 9% in Michigan for August

LANSING, MI (WTVB) - For the third straight month, the unemployment rate in Michigan , which had been on the decline in the first half of the year, has risen again. It’s back to 9%, up .3% from the July figure.  A year ago in August, it was at 9.3%. Michigan’s auto industry had been creating jobs until the summer months, but with most auto plants already operating at full capacity, it appears room has been running out for new hires. The increase in the unemployment rate last month in Michigan erased all the gains made in that rate in the previous 8 months.

The Business Roundtable, a group of the nation’s top CEO’s led by former Michigan Governor John Engler, says many of their firms will not be hiring in the 4th quarter because of Congressional gridlock and the fight over raising the debt ceiling. Spokesman Bill Miller says they know because they asked. President Obama addressed the Roundtable yesterday, saying House Republicans won’t raise the debt ceiling unless Obamacare is defunded, and that won’t happen.
