LANSING, MI (WTVB) - Scrap metal thieves in Michigan…your day is coming and it may be sooner than you think. It’s a big problem whether it be in a large metro and rural area. By overwhelming margins, the Michigan House Thursday approved bills that would make it tougher for scrap metal thieves to sell their stolen material to scrap dealers. The bills impose more regulations, require more verification and creates a three day waiting period before the dealers would have to hand over the cash for some items.
State House Speaker Jase Bolger of Marshall says he has seen the devastation that scrappers have caused in some neighborhoods in Detroit, where homes have been stripped of their plumbing and wiring. Republican Bob Genetski of Saugatuck was one of just a handful of republicans who opposed the bills, saying it imposed too much regulation on scrap dealers. The package now goes to the State Senate.
