Michigan Attorney General orders telemarketer to stop misleading statements

LANSING (WKZO) -- Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette has ordered a Southfield-based telemarketer to stop making misleading statements while raising funds for charities.

Authorities began an investigation into Associated Community Services after a former employee reported that they were given script which prompted them to tell people who didn't want to donate by credit card over the phone that the company was on file with the State Attorney General's Office.  ACS is on file with the office, but the listing has nothing to do with its ability to protect credit card information, it only means that the company is licensed to raise funds on behalf of Michigan charities.

If the company does not stop using the telemarketing script, Shuette intents to bring civil fines of up to ten-thousand dollars for each alleged violation.
