Welfare, truancy connected in new Michigan House bill

The Michigan State House
The Michigan State House

LANSING (WKZO) -- State Representative Al Pscholka is pushing legislation with a simple message for welfare recipients:  if the kids don't go to school, the parents don't get paid.  The Stevensville Republican calls the bill the "Parental Responsibility Act."

Pscholka says he's not intending to punish parents, but rather give them a financial incentive to ensure their kids go to class.  He adds poverty is often passed down in families from one generation to the next, and his bill is aimed at stopping that cycle.
