KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- In partnership with professional bellydancers from the West Michigan School of Middle Eastern Dance, Kalamazoo celebrities whirled, twirled, and shook in the inaugural Shimmy Contest at this year’s Greek Festival.
Starting at around 4:30 pm on Saturday evening at the Arcadia Creek Festival Place in downtown Kalamazoo, hundreds gathered to witness the celebrities shake their stuff for their respective charities. Watch above for footage.
The celebrities that turned out for the event included Jay Morris from WKZO’s The Trifecta, Bill Wright, Krista Hatcher from WKFR Morning Show, Kirk Latimer, Gabriel Giron, celebrity SPCA members, and celebrity heart disease survivors.
Bill Wright raised the most funds for his charity “Wright for Kids”, making him the winner of the contest. Theo & Stacy’s Restaurant donated $500.00 to the winning charity as a prize incentive as well as giving $100 to the remaining seven charities. Festival organizer Betty Peristeridis says the shimmy contest will now be an annual event at Greek Fest.
Charities receiving donations from the contest included: Wright for Kids, Roof Sit, Gryphon Place, Kinetic Affect, SPCA of Southwest Michigan, Go Red for Women, International Childcare USA, and Sons of Malta.
