Hope College Graduate Announces US Senate Candidacy

by

BYRON CENTER, MI (WHTC) - The first GOP hat has been tossed into the 2014 US Senate candidacy ring.

Terry Lynn Land, the Hope College graduate from Byron Center who spent eight years as Michigan’s Secretary of State, announced her intention this morning to run for the seat that Carl Levin is retiring from after six six-year terms. Pressure had been building on Republicans to get a candidate out and about, with presumed Democratic Party nominee Gary Peters already pressing the flesh at last week’s Mackinac Policy Conference.

GOP Senate hopefuls Andrew Raczkowski, Jack Hoogendyk, Mike Bouchard and Pete Hoekstra hadn’t drawn a lot of support from the Republican National Committee since incumbent Spencer Abraham was upset by Debbie Stabenow 13 years ago, but Land is confident of such backing as a RNC Committeewoman. Zeeland Congressman Bill Huizenga feels that Land is one of a number of Senate hopefuls from a deep and strong GOP candidate pool, which includes fellow House Representative Mike Rogers, who would be considered by political pundits as the frontrunner should the Brighton Republican decide to enter the race.

Land added that she should be filing her candidacy’s paperwork with the Federal Elections Commission by July 1st.
