DETROIT (WKZO) -- New legislation introduced this week would prohibit the city of Detroit from selling publicly owned art from the Detroit Institute of Arts Collection.

On Thursday, Senate Majority Leader Randy Richardville of Monroe said he is sponsoring the bill. The proposed measure would take steps to safeguard the DIA's collection from possible sale if the city declares bankruptcy.

Recently, Detroit Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr warned the museum that if the city does declare bankruptcy, a judge could order the sale of city-owned art to satisfy some of Detroit's $15 billion  in debts.
