Michigan clinic pays patient over HIV discrimination

YPSILANTI (WKZO) -- A Michigan man is 145-pounds lighter and 1,500-dollars richer thanks to a settlement with an Ypsilanti-based bariatric clinic.

Frank Hill says Forest Health Medical Center tried to cancel his surgery last year because he is HIV positive.  According to the U.S. Justice Department, the center's owner, Barix Clinics, has been ordered to pay 15,000-dollars to Hill and 20,000-dollars to a Pennsylvania man who made a similar claim.

Barix is also required to pay a ten-thousand dollar civil penalty, must train personnel on proper adherence to the Americans with Disabilities Act as well as implement an anti-discrimination policy.
