Stage lights, collaboration and choreography all played a role in Nine Inch Nails , Phoenix and Arcade Fire making Entertainment Weekly 's list of top performances this year.
EW writes that the "epic, churning light show" Nine Inch Nails used during the tour supporting Hesitation Marks "was [ Trent ] Reznor 's psyche made physical; only when he bellowed the final note of 'Hurt' could audiences exhale."
Phoenix was praised for joining forces on stage with R&B singer R. Kelly at the 2013 Coachella festival. "Now that we've heard his 'Ignition' seamlessly mashed up with their '1901,' we can never go back," EW says.
Arcade Fire's lauded YouTube Music Awards performance of "Afterlife" featured a different kind of collaboration. Director Spike Jonze brought his "wild vision" to the "surreal live-video experience," according to EW , and actress Greta Gerwig contributed "inspired choreography" that complemented the music.
