Common Core hearings held in Lansing this week

LANSING (WLMI) -- State lawmakers continue to debate the merits of signing Michigan on to the Common Core Standards curriculum. The Common Core Standards basically outline what students in several state's public schools should be taught, and there are concerns that adopting them could interfere with a local district's ability to set its own standards.

State Representative Ken Yonker, of Caledonia, says teachers have complaints, too. He says they're wondering if adopting Common Core will mean all the time they spent preparing their classroom lessons will end up being a waste.

Supporters of the Common Core Standards say that they ensure some kind of parity across the schools of different states. A State House subcommittee has been holding hearings on the Common Core this week.
