Last month, Vampire Weekend unveiled videos for new cuts “ Diane Young ” and “ Step ” from their upcoming album, Modern Vampires of the City . Frontman Ezra Koenig says that the band decided to drop the tracks at the same time in order to give fans a preview of the variety of sonic landscapes that are featured in the release.
"We consider those to both be singles and we like the idea of revealing…two different parts of this record because there’s so many different moods, we didn’t feel like any one song could capture the whole thing,” he tells ABC News Radio. “So we wanted people to have a sense of the scope of the whole record.”
Koenig adds that he’s come across the name Diane Young quite a bit on the Internet since releasing the track. “We found out there are quite a few Diane Youngs out there in the world, including some that are semi-famous,” he explains. “Apparently, a dermatologist and some kind of music manager in the U.K., but in the early days of writing that song the title could’ve been a few things. [But] there’s something about Diane Young that was always the most appealing.”
Modern Vampires of the City will arrive in stores on May 14. If you pre-order the album now at iTunes , you’ll receive an instant download of “Diane Young.”
